I just received the PDFs of the Doherty articles, which are the following in case anyone else wants to know (now or down the road):
Quote:Joan L. Chaconas, "President's message", Surratt Courier, Vol XIV, No.1 (Jan 1989)
Steven G. Miller, "More on Capt. Doherty...", Surratt Courier, Vol XV, No.9 (Sep 1990)
I can confirm that it's the Miller article that has these points about Doherty's early life that were mentioned at the beginning of this thread:
Quote:He was educated in Montreal, studying mostly in commercial schools. In 1857 he graduated from St. Hyacinth College. Immediately thereafter he began to study law with a Canadian firm. In 1859 he moved to Boston where he worked for a large dry goods establishment until the Civil War broke out.
I don't think that I've seen some of these details anywhere else and this is some of the crucial information for me in terms of piecing together what I'm working on with his relatives in this period.
As such, I'd like to contact Steven Miller to find out his sources on this and what else he might know.
Does anyone have contact info for him?

I have not been in contact with Mr. Miller for about four years, but I did recommend him to write a chapter on the Garrett Farm Patrol for a new book that should be out on The Lincoln Assassination Riddle this spring. I'll PM you an old email address that I hope still works.

Thank you very much, Laurie. As an update, the email you gave me was still good. Steve Miller replied right away and we've been corresponding regularly over these past couple of months. He's been an enthusiastic treasure trove of information and leads, including to a document in private hands that was invaluable in linking up Edward Doherty's early life to his Canadian relatives that are the subject of my research. So much appreciated!

Rec'd word from the editors yesterday that the book will not be released until May. I had hoped to sell it at the Surratt Conference in April. Rather poor publication scheduling on the part of Kent State Press, imo. The book sales at our conference is one of the highlights -- for our coffers as well as the people who come to purchase.

Sounds like a fascinating and worthwhile new book, as long as it's not loaded with revisionist history. Not being accusatory; I just like the facts, to paraphrase that famous detective, Joe Friday.

I have only seen my chapter, so I cannot judge the quality just yet. There are some excellent scholars on the authors' list, but also a few that I have never heard of in the assassination field.

I'm certain yours would be both excellent and informative. I'd buy the book just for that.
