Although he fired at close range, it was a real possibilty that Booth might have missed. He must have had knowledge of how much powder to use. If the powder was correct there was the possibilty that the ball might not penetrate through the skull. This all further gives weight to the fact that there were many variables that had to be in place for success. Obviously, they were. Any one of the many variables being slightly different may have saved Lincoln's life that evening.
