RE: What were you doing when..... - BettyO - 11-22-2013 05:59 AM Wonderful story, Rick! I remember a lady who went to our church. I was 16 years old and I loved to sit and talk with her before services began. She was an elderly Russian lady who had come to America when she was about 10 years old. She lived in Richmond and had married an American man. One story she told me was of seeing Czar Nicholas II and his family when she was about 6 years old. It was some sort of parade in St. Petersburg, Russia and the Czar was riding a white horse. People lined the street to view the procession. She told me that she was in front of the crowd - not too far from the Czar. She said he was not too tall a person; really rather short. She also saw Czarina Alexandria and their children up close. They were riding in a carriage behind the Czar. They dismounted and went into a church, passing not too far from where she was standing with her parents. All she could say when she wrapped up her story was "Those poor, poor beautiful children! They were a lovely family and that was a horrid time", recounting the assassination of the Czar and his family in 1918.
