Question - we know that Lew Wallace drew sketches of the conspirators "from life" in the trial room. Were these sketches actually drawn from life in the courtroom do you think?

Just curious!!

Hi Betty, yes I do think they were drawn from life in the courtroom. He never visited anyone in their cells. The one he made of Sam Arnold is labeled "The Arraignment". As we all know, they never wore hoods to the courtroom again after that date.

Thanks, John! Perhaps he was just doodling away. It was said that he was bored with the proceedings. I do know that Hartranft did not want any sketch artists at the trial -

SO.....it must be that those Leslie's and Harper's sketches were NOT done in life but from memory or descriptions!
