Dawn Foster's computer died and she asked me "to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Please give everyone my love. I miss you all already!"

Dawn, if you can read or login from another computer, please write Betty or me if you are considering buying a new Windows 8 computer. I have been using Windows 8 for over a year now (I downloaded and installed all 3 of Microsoft's beta releases), and we both have some pretty strong feelings about it that we would share with anyone considering the "upgrade."

RE: Happy Thanksgiving - Gene C - 11-21-2012 01:07 PM

Are you hinting that it's an upgrade in name only.
(I know nothing about computers - I have Windows Vista)

RE: Happy Thanksgiving - RJNorton - 11-21-2012 01:11 PM

It's just so incredibly different from XP, Vista, or Windows 7 that it takes a lot of time to learn. Companies that buy Windows 8 machines are definitely going to need training sessions for their employees. If Betty sees this thread she can share her experience.

Is that a current issue of Newsweek? The reason that I ask is that Sidney Blumenthal, author of the piece on The Great Campaigner, is a member of the Surratt Society and is working on a book that will include parts on Lincoln, Booth, and the assassination.

I had lunch with him and Terry Alford last year. He would not go into details, but I know that he does not believe in some modern assessments on those subjects. His book is due out, hopefully, near the end of 2013. He promised me that he would consider speaking at the 2014 Surratt conference. I told him I would slap him silly if he didn't finish the book in 2013 (told Terry the same thing about his Fortune's Fool book on Booth). Sidney told me that he would slap HIMSELF silly if the book wasn't out in 2013!

If you don't follow the political world, Sidney Blumenthal is a trusted adviser to Bill and Hillary Clinton. I didn't hold that against him because he is a very nice person and very interesting to listen to.

I talked to Joe Di Cola, and we decided to post the same cartoon Joe sent last November at about this time.

Give thanks, all ye people, give thanks to the Lord,
Alleluias of freedom with joyful accord:
Let the East and the West, North and South roll along,
Sea, mountain and prairie, one thanksgiving song.

- from “The President’s Hymn” written by William Augustus Muhlenburg for President Abraham Lincoln, 1863

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is so cute!!! (The man looks like a certain Maunsell B. Field to me.)

Can anybody tell me for what reason turkey is eaten on Thanksgiving? What is the origin of this tradition? We celebrate thanksgiving, too, (first Sunday in October,)but it's the most vegetarian day throughout the year, I'd suppose. Since it is the harvest that is thanked for, the animals' lifes are largely spared on this day.

RE: Happy Thanksgiving - BettyO - 11-17-2013 05:53 PM

Eva -

..."Supposedly, it is said, that pilgrims (some of the first American colonists) had a feast consisting of cooked turkey after their first harvest in the year 1621, which popularly came to be known as 'First Thanksgiving Feast'. It continued for three days and included ninety Indians. There is however no evidence to prove that turkey was cooked during the first feast. It could have been Venison-flesh of a deer or wild goose meat." -- http://www.thanksgiving-day.org/turkey.html
