Here is an interesting situation. Post 383 states that DAVIS "gave his best oration etc. at the African Church, in Feb. 1865 and was lauded accordingly. In direct opposition to this is a quote - from "Judah P. Benjamin, Confederate Statesman", by Robert Douthat Meade. "A mass meeting was then held in the African Church at Richmond on Feb 9 ...BENJAMIN made the most important speech ON THAT FATEFUL OCCASSION." It is obvious, that I do not have the full story. May we please have the source of your quote. Did Davis AND Benjamin, make their "Most Memorable" speeches the same day ?
I have not read Davis' life, to any extent, but why would he get so much opposition from people he appointed to office, including his Vice Pres.?
