RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 08-17-2024 05:01 AM Excellent, Anita. Yes, this is Mary Lincoln's bed. It was in her room when she was at Bellevue Place in 1875. Nowadays it's at the Depot Museum in Batavia, Illinois. https://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/sites/bellevue.htm RE: Who is this person? - J. Beckert - 08-17-2024 10:37 AM O.K., Roger. We're doing bed trivia now? - count me in. Lincoln's death bed. A notable actor slept in it a few weeks before the assassination and Booth is not who I'm thinking of. Who was it? RE: Who is this person? - Rogerm - 08-17-2024 10:48 AM John Wilkes Booth Sorry. I sent this before seeing that you are not thinking of Booth. RE: Who is this person? - J. Beckert - 08-17-2024 10:52 AM Booth did take a nap in the bed, but I said Booth was not who I was thinking of, Roger. It's another actor of some note. RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 08-17-2024 11:43 AM Joe, was it John Mathews? RE: Who is this person? - J. Beckert - 08-17-2024 01:41 PM That's a negative, PMOTI. Think a Ford's stock actor. RE: Who is this person? - J. Beckert - 08-17-2024 03:47 PM Googling is encouraged for this one. (And his first name was Charles) RE: Who is this person? - AussieMick - 08-17-2024 04:25 PM Charles Warwick? (Thanks, Google.... if I am correct) RE: Who is this person? - J. Beckert - 08-17-2024 06:05 PM That's it, Mick. He was at times part of the stock company at Ford's Theater. In March, 1865 he rented a room across the street at the Petersen house and came home to find Booth, who had come to visit him, taking a nap in the very bed that Lincoln died in. I have a Ford's playbill from January, 1865 in which Booth's good friend friend John McCullough, Alice Gray, whose picture was found on his body, and Warwick all performed together in a production of The Robbers. RE: Who is this person? - AussieMick - 08-17-2024 09:47 PM Like Roger, I recall (now) reading that Booth had slept in the bed ... so must have read some time about him visiting the lodging House but hadnt noted the occupancy of Warwick. My google was something like 'bed booth petersen house slept' thence to https://artsandculture.google.com/story/history-of-the-petersen-house-fords-theatre/EwUBQF-Y2uAHKw?hl=en and a quick search for 'charles' RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 08-19-2024 06:23 PM "I seem to recollect having heard as a boy that I was born in the _______________________." This is a two part question. Who said this, and what goes in the blank? RE: Who is this person? - AussieMick - 08-19-2024 07:30 PM Lincoln, early morning? RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 08-20-2024 03:25 AM That's a logical guess, Michael, but it was not Abraham Lincoln. RE: Who is this person? - Rob Wick - 08-20-2024 10:41 AM If it's not Abraham, how about Robert? If it is him, the Globe Tavern would be his birthplace. Best Rob RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 08-20-2024 10:59 AM Well done, Rob! In chapter one of Jason Emerson's bio on Robert it says: "Interestingly, Robert himself was not certain where he was born. I seem to recollect having heard as a boy that I was born in the Globe Tavern,” Robert wrote to a friend in 1886, “but I have also in later years seen such a newspaper statement and therefore was inclined to think otherwise. It is probably true for what it is worth." |
