Harry Hawk?

William Ferguson?

RE: Who is this person? - Rogerm - 09-20-2013 11:38 AM

Was it written by Thaddeus Stevens?

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-20-2013 11:42 AM

Betty and Roger - good guesses - but none correct.

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-21-2013 03:53 AM

Hint #2: He was from Maryland.

Reverdy Johnson?

Rob

Good job, Rob. His handwriting almost makes Ida's look pretty good.

Believe it or not, Roger, I'm getting to where I can decipher some of her stuff. Smile

Best
Rob

Great, Rob. My eyes start watering just thinking about it.

The scan of Reverdy Johnson's handwriting came from an old Lincoln Lore dated November, 1964. The "My Dear C" was John Cresswell.

Anita, this is a wild guess: Norman Judd?

RE: Who is this person? - Anita - 09-21-2013 03:54 PM

Good try Roger. Maybe this will help.

Hint #1 He was a politician and a Republican.

RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 09-21-2013 04:57 PM

Although I'm petty sure it's not him: Schuyler Colfax?

RE: Who is this person? - Rogerm - 09-21-2013 05:08 PM

A really wild guess; Senator Harlan of Iowa, Robert Lincoln's eventual father-in-law.

RE: Who is this person? - Anita - 09-21-2013 07:28 PM

Eva and Rogerm- good tries but he is neither.

Hint #2 Illinois and Abolitionist

Hint # 3 He wrote to Lincoln:

Springfield Aug 17. 1858.

Mr Lincoln

I send enclosed, -- though I suppose you have been at Tazewell. Judge Trumbull came on Saturday -- he received your letter written at Beardstown. He goes to Alton this evening,-- I am not certain that he will go to Rushville, though I think it important. I also send you a letter from Sharpe

Since Trumbulls speech -- they are all mad.

No news from other counties since you left.....

OK, Anita, I think I've got it now: Ozias M. Hatch.
