RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 11-11-2019 08:34 AM Kudos, Steve! Yes, it is a photo of Daniel Chester French taken in ca. 1875 when he was in Italy. French was the designer of the famous Abraham Lincoln statue at the Lincoln Memorial. French created over 100 public monuments during his life. Photo credit: p. 58 of Harold Holzer's Monument Man - Life & Art of Daniel Chester French. I had the same thought when I first saw the picture. French's hat is hiding a receding hairline, though. Maybe it's one of Nancy Hanks Lincoln's brothers? RE: Who is this person? - Steve Whitlock - 02-16-2020 03:38 PM (02-16-2020 03:08 PM)Steve Wrote: So, this guy's grandfather was named Joshua Hanks? Maybe it's one of Nancy Hanks Lincoln's brothers?Steve, This guy's father was Joshua Hanks, uncle of Nancy Hanks Lincoln; however, in a Feb 1909 newspaper interview he got her confused with Nancy Hanks Hall, his father's sister. He has a brother named Solomon Hanks among his siblings, and his name is Thomas Jefferson Hanks. His family moved from Hardy Co., WV to OH, and circa 1864 T. J. Hanks moved to IL. I posted this because of all the hurrahs about Abe not resembling Thomas Lincoln, and that his father must have been George Broomfield, or Abe Enloe, etc, etc. There is a photo you've seen for Sophia (Hanks) Lynch-Legrand that bears resemblance to Abe, as does this photo. Perhaps some Hanks genes were the reason Abe looked the way he did. Thomas J. Hanks was near the end of his life when he gave the interview and died in Apr 1909. Both the Feb 1909 article and Apr 1909 obit have this picture by way of verification. I wish the reporter that did the interview had inquired about Lucy Hanks. RE: Who is this person? - Steve Whitlock - 02-17-2020 10:56 AM While I'm discussing the Joseph and Ann (Lee) Hanks family there is another point I'd like to make. Several sources claim Ann (Lee) Hanks, aka Nancy Anna Hanks returned to Rockingham Co., VA to visit her Lee relatives after Joseph Hanks died. She was baptised there 8 Oct 1808, and many think she died there around that date. None of that is true! The Lee families in Rockingham about the time Joseph Hanks died are not related, and they removed to Botetourt Co., VA circa 1794. Per tax records no Lee relatives, who came from Orange Co., VA, showed up until about 1817. However, the woman being claimed as Nancy Anna Hanks, wife of Joseph, was in fact Nancy Hawk, wife of John Hawk. More specifically, she was Nancy (Runyon/Runion) Hawk, who shows up as Nancy Hank in several records, along with Br. Hank (Brother Hank), who some have taken to be Joseph Hanks Jr, but who was in the Hardin Co., KY Tax Lists 1808-1816, and 10 Nov 1810 married Mary "Polly" Young there. Br. Hank was John Hawk, husband of Nancy Anna Runyon. There were no Hanks or Hank in the 1810 census, or tax lists, for Rockingham, but George Hawk and John Hawke were in the 1810 census. John Hawk died in 1815 and Nancy Hawk (clearly Nancy Hawk, with several children, in the image) is in the 1820 census. At some point between 1820-1830 she moved to OH where she died in 1830. There is a book, ""Settlers by the long grey trail: some pioneers to old Augusta ...” that has pertinent information on pg 333, 443-444, with Joseph Hanks family information on pg 445, but which acknowledges the n in Hank may be a w. Even with the marriage record John Hawk is shown incorrectly as John Hank: John Hank [John Hawk] in the Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1660-1800 Name: John Hank [Johannes "John" Hawk] Spouse: Nancy Runnion [Nancy Runyon] Marriage Date: 24 Feb 1800 Marriage Location: Rockingham County, Virginia ************************************** Johannes “John” Hawk, Sr Birth 1770 Virginia, USA Death 1815 (aged 44–45) Rockingham County, Virginia, USA Burial Ward Cemetery Bath, Allen County, Ohio, USA Memorial ID 64271389 · View Source Born Estimated Son of Tobias Hawks And Catarina Family Members Spouse Nancy Anna Runyon Hawk 1772–1830 Children Photo Susannah Hawk Roush 1812–1849 ********************************* Nancy Anna Runyon Hawk Birth 1772 Virginia, USA Death 1830 (aged 57–58) Ohio, USA Burial Ward Cemetery Bath, Allen County, Ohio, USA Memorial ID 64271235 · View Source Children: (1)Isaac HAWK B 1801 Virginia (2)Daniel HAWK B 28 SEP 1802 Virginia (3)Mary HAWK B 14 DEC 1804 Virginia (4)John HAWK B 14 FEB 1806 Virginia (5)Samuel HAWK B 1810 Virginia (6)Susannah HAWK B 3 JUL 1812 Virginia Family Members Parents John Washington Runyon 1739–1830 Anne Elizabeth Goodpasture Runyon 1739–1821 Spouse Johannes Hawk 1770–1815 Siblings Isaac Barefoot Runyon 1757–1850 Elizabeth Runyon Zetty 1761–1844 John Washington Runyon 1765–1848 Photo Jacob Runyon 1768–1840 Mary Runyon Ford 1770 – unknown Photo Anderson Runion 1775–1865 Photo Daniel Runyon 1786–1843 Children Photo Susannah Hawk Roush 1812–1849 **************** John Hawke in the 1810 United States Federal Census Name: John Hawke Home in 1810 (City, County, State): Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Virginia Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 3 Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44 : 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over : 2 Number of Household Members Under 16: 5 Number of Household Members Over 25: 4 Number of Household Members: 9 ****************************** Nancy Hawk in the 1820 United States Federal Census Name: Nancy Hawk [Widow of John Hawke in 1810 census] Home in 1820 (City, County, State): Rockingham, Virginia Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820 Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15: 2 Free White Persons - Males - 16 thru 18: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 16 thru 25: 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over : 2 Number of Persons - Engaged in Agriculture: 2 Free White Persons - Under 16: 5 Free White Persons - Over 25: 2 Total Free White Persons: 8 Total All Persons - White, Slaves, Colored, Other: 8 ******************************************* The 8 Oct 1808 baptism of Nancy Hank is also mentioned, but I imagine Ann Lee Hanks was already baptized.
