Full packets went out to all Surratt Society members the week before Thanksgiving, but the conference is open to all. Send me your mailing address (laurie.verge@pgparks.com) and I'll send you the full packet. I believe that the information is now posted on our website also -- surrattmuseum.org

RE: 2018 Surratt Society Conference
I am unable to attend this year's conference. I transferred to Kalamazoo Valley CC, began classes last month and purchased a house there. On top of classes, I met the most amazing girl in the world and am trying to look for a new job in the area. So yeah, I'm gonna have to skip this year's festivities and hope everyone has a good time. I will be home for a week in March for spring break though.

Man, do I love to hear the words "I'm ready!" come out of the mouth of a scheduled speaker at our conference. Wes will be doing a CSI Investigation of how the assassination was handled by authorities. There are already over 90 registrants, our Sunday bus trip to the Shenandoah Valley is filled, and the Friday tour to Ole Virginny has less than ten seats available.

If you have not rec'd a conference information packet, contact me at laurie.verge@pgparks.com or call the museum at 301-868-1121, and we will speed it on its way. Or, better yet, visit our website at surrattmuseum.org to view all of the information and download a registration form.

We send well wishes to everyone at the Surratt Conference! Several members of this forum are speakers today. Susan Higginbotham is speaking as I write this.

RE: 2018 Surratt Society Conference
I am glad to have returned to the Surratt Conference after a three-year hiatus (not planned). The presentations were all enjoyable and some were thought-provoking. I am sure that after I review my notes I will have several questions for the experts here. But for now, here is one:
The gentleman who gave the engaging presentation called, "Dr. Samuel Mudd: The Man, the Martyr, and the Movies," said that Mudd charged Booth the grand sum of $25 to set his leg. When someone in the audience asked about the evidence of such, I believe the speaker attributed it to oral provenance. Any thoughts?

RE: 2018 Surratt Society Conference
The payment for services rendered, medical care, over night accommodations, may be an attempt to screen Mudd from accusations regarding his involvement in the plan to kill/kidnap Lincoln.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I think Mudd told someone that he was paid $25. See p. 234.

From what I have read it's the other way around. Mudd did not specifically charge $25; rather this is simply the amount Booth or Herold put into Mudd's hand as the two fugitives departed the Mudd home on the 15th. In other words, it wasn't "a charge" decided by Mudd. Rather it was what Booth decided Mudd's services were worth. I read this in one of the older Mudd biographies, but I do not recall which one.
