Roger, thanks for posting the photo of sheep grazing on the White House lawn. I just read that the wool was auctioned off to raise money for the war effort.

I have not been there in years. They do so many road construction projects in DC now that I'm afraid I'll get lost - this from someone who used to go downtown at least once a month. However, I just called the family, and they said the food was excellent.

The Grill is known for their crab cakes, so the guys got those and loved them. My daughter is into eating healthy and trying new things and enjoyed a hummus platter with pita bread and vegetable dips (sounds like an appetizer to me!).

They did laugh about their appetizers. They were there early and there was a half-price offer on all appetizers. Our family loves shrimp in any shape and form, so they each ordered the shrimp cocktail. It consisted of one huge shrimp (probably a prawn) with a dab of cocktail sauce.

The prices are fairly standard for DC fare, but not overly priced.

I second Anita in all points - very interesting various information, neat photo and belated happy birthday (sounds it was regarding such awesome gift).

While we're on the subject of food in our nation's capital, here's an article on some of the famous eateries in the city's past. Many of these served Presidents and First Ladies. Even Lady Bird Johnson and her daughters used to sit at the counter at one (now closed) and order from the menu. It was called Reeves's Bakery, but also served breakfast and lunch items. It was practically world-famous for its strawberry pies. J. Edgar Hoover ordered a ham sandwich from there almost every day.

I also noted that soft shell crabs are in season and served there. Now I have to con someone into taking me there for a soft shell crab sandwich!

I much prefer soft shells to hard shells. One can starve to death trying to pick enough meat out of hard shells to sustain hunger. My motto during soft shell season is to order a soft shell sandwich first to fill you up and then have fun dilly-dallying over the hard shells and beer!
